Welcome to this edition of "Inside MBT!"

Each month of 2019 we're exploring and celebrating the impact of the arts through "The Arts + Social Impact Explorer." This month we look at how the arts affect community development, from tax revenues, to empathy amongst diverse groups, to a win-win growth partnership with our sponsors. Then check the bottom for exciting developments in our MBT community: announcing the onsale of this coming season of live entertainment!

| COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

"Artists, arts organizations, and artistic activities in general play can play a valuable role in the development and long-term health and sustainability of our communities. Research shows that communities with a vibrant cultural scene are more desirable to live in, have greater economic stability, and attract a more diverse and educated work force.

Often when a community struggles with a social concern, arts projects can foster cooperative dialogue and bring about solutions and change. The arts drive an increased tax base, stronger social networks and community cohesion, reduced health risks, higher empathy, and more community pride. These things, together, make it possible for communities to progress toward their goals."*

IMPACT

105% Increase in Revenue
  • Art and community development results in greater tax revenues. The downtown Phoenix creativity hub yielded a 105 percent increase in tax receipts, compared to a citywide decline of 1.04 percent.*
| MBT contributes approximately $100,000 annually to the city’s general fund in admissions and other taxes, acts as a community driver for arts tourism to the tune of $6 million in economic impact, and provides a professional event space for local entities such as the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra, various performing arts schools, film festivals, the technical college, and much more. According to this article from 2017:

"The direct economic impact MBT makes on our local community is substantial. The theatre’s direct annual operating expenditures total $3,000,000. This includes $149,000 in lodging in local hotels and another $10,000 in artist hospitality. Additional artist-paid economic activity is estimated at another $275,000 in lodging plus ancillary spending for transportation, souvenirs and gifts, and meals and snacks. Patron spending, based on figures determined by the Arts and Economic Prosperity study from the Americans for the Arts, equates to an additional $2.7 million in direct spending associated with our 110,000 patrons." SPOTLIGHT

My Heart in a Suitcase was a part of the 17-18 MBT Wade Bennett King Education Series. The impactful theatre based on a memoir by Anne Lehmann Foz offered a path to empathy for the perils of persecuted people through a gripping and poignant production about a hard decision, the strength of the human spirit and the enduring power of a family’s love.

The powerful performance was further impacted by the diversity of the partnerships that came together to sponsor the show. Our sponsors make community events happen, and then share our stage and become a part of the success.

School Conselor, Jamie Betz, shared her powerful experience after attending the performance, "We had 46 students and staff attend last week’s showing of My Heart In A Suitcase. Wow. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the bunch and there were many great conversations had on the bus ride home. Thank you so much for our scholarship (we are a Title 1 school and would not be able to access such opportunities otherwise).
The play was powerful and just being inside the majestic and beautiful Mount Baker Theatre was wonderful.”
